So to celebrate Meade’s birthday, we are going tubing. This time I’m bringing a water proof disposable camera to remember the day. We have a great time . . . flipping over, trying to swim with our tubes to get another beer . . . I have to scrapbook these memories.

Happy birthday, babe! Can’t wait to celebrate even more.

My Favorite Inspiration is my husband.

He helped me find my passion. He is unlike any other. He loves me more than I ever thought one could.

I am truly grateful for him. I love him so much it hurts.

The top photo of us is taken by my in-laws during a Christmas Day snow in New Orleans. . . crazy, right? One thing about this particular photograph is now looking at it the only thing that’s left is us – the tree didn’t survive a terrible storm and the suburban lived a long life, but is no longer. (even the neighbor’s car in the far back is gone.)

I took the bottom photograph of him as he was leaving for the day. It reminds me how much I miss him even when he’s gone for just a couple of hours.

The quote in the middle sounds like a fortune out of a cookie, “You will have a long and happy life.” I love it.

He helps me with my photography, encouraging me to do it and giving me feedback on each piece. He also helps with my craftiness when it comes to selecting colors or layouts, he helps me when I’m stuck.

If you find someone in your life that wants to be a part of yours, hold on to them.

Supplies: Background Blue Cardstock (EK Success), Green Textured Cardstock (DCWV), Vellum Quotes (DCWV), Middle Quote (K&Company), Green Ribbon (Stampin’ Up), Green Flowers (Prima Got Flowers?), Blue Heart Brads, Buttons, Glitter Pencil (Marshall Photo)

For the past several months, I have been trying to challenge my photographic progress. Push me to take more and do more with them. I used to post a photograph a day, then changed it to one a week, but that still wasn’t getting me out photographing. You’ve all heard about 365 projects, especially since the movie Julie and Julia.

You’ve probably even seen blogs that are currently doing a 365 photo a day project. If not, do a search for 365 Photo Project and you’ll be overwhelmed.

I’ve thought about it, it’s been done before, so that’s not for me.

That lead me to think about other projects I can do to encourage my activity as a photographer. I was reading this post You Know You’re A Photo Project Junkie When… and decided I agree with her. There are so many photo projects out there that you’ve probably already done or are doing and don’t even realize it.

I challenged my scrapbook girls to do a photographic walk in their neighborhood. It’s a great excuse to get out, get some exercise, and get some different photographs to scrapbook. You might see your neighborhood in a new light or find a place you never knew about. The scrapbook idea is to use these photos in a layout to tell about where you live and what you see around you. It’s neat to see what others don’t.

That post also tells about a fun family photo scavenger hunt around the neighborhood. A great twist to my challenge, it gives you something to find.

Lastly, she did a photo interview where you answer questions about your life with photographs. An excellent idea because then you scrapbook them, like she did with her mini album, and you have a record of your life at this moment. Scrapbookers mostly scrap about events and their loved ones, rarely about themselves. This activity is a perfect way to get some info down about you.

Here are some other possible projects to take on:

Strangers – you meet a stranger, ask to take their photo, then get some bio info on them.

Collection – pick an object or color or whatever and only photograph what falls into that category. The challenge is finding ways to make the same thing appealing in each image and not boring.

Basics – go back to the beginning before fancy, dummy proof digital cameras and test your skill with a disposable camera or a completely manual film camera.

Metamorphosis – this long term project depicts the changes over time. The way a tree changes color, leaves fall, then it blossoms again.

Macro – get up close and personal, so close you might not even recognize what’s in the image.

Yearbook – remember during school you would vote on who’s the class clown or most successful. Take photographs of people who fit into each category.

Blind Eyes – transform into being blind and figure out how to take great photographs based on your other senses.

A to Z – two interpretations of this project are to photograph objects or activities that start with the letter, like a can for “C” or wrestling for “W”, the other is to photograph objects that look like the letter.

After each challenge is completed, create a themed album or a layout or frame some display of your accomplishment for all to enjoy and learn about you and your point of view.

One of the easiest ways to scrapbook is to use your photographs as a natural color selector. When you’re at a loss for what to do, start by pulling out some products you have that match the colors in your photos.

Here I used a series of photos taken of me trying a horrible drink, Tarantula. So the green shirt and screaming blue beverage made it simple: the paper, the flowers, the buttons, the brad, and even the pen color.

Remember that you are scrapping your photographs not your embellishments, so let the photos tell you how to do it. By matching or complimenting your photographs, you make them pop.

It’s like fashion, when you wear mismatched colors, it doesn’t work. When you wear the exact same color, you look boring. But when you wear colors that compliment each other, you get compliments.

Let’s compliment our layouts by complimenting our photographs.

Here’s a new series called “Favorite Friday” which is where I get to talk about a favorite of mine. Could be anything from a favorite website to a favorite photograph.

For my first Friday, I want to share my favorite little gift I made for a friend of mine when his first child was born. He sent his friends and family some great photos of the new baby, so I thought on how I could incorporate these photos in a congrats card. After doing some researching, I found this adorable mini-album like pop-up card. I tweaked it a bit for what I had and I was very happy with the result.

Here it’s standing as a display, but it also closes up like a card.

The inside shows how each row inter-weaves almost. The top row spells out the child’s name, the middle has some relevant inspirational words like family, cherish, etc., then the bottom highlights all the precious baby’s first photos.

I just loved making this gift and I’m sure he loved receiving it. Definitely one of my favorites!

Supplies: All Textured Cardstock, Middle Row Cardstock, Letter Stamps, Word Stamps, Ribbon, Quote Stickers

For those who don’t know (like me not too long ago), and “ATC” stands for Artist Trading Card which simply put is a 2.5×3.5 size decorated card that artists, well, they trade it.

Why do we trade these cards? First of all, it’s to express our skills as an artist whether that be a painter, mixed media, crafter, etc. Maybe even try something new on a small scale. Then to share our talents with fellow artists. In turn you get to see other styles and possibly learn a new technique. At the very least, you have a beautiful card that you can collect, display, use on a layout, on a handmade greeting card, or any art project.

I just completed my very first ATC for a Fiskateer’s 50th Birthday celebration-

and then my first set for a themed swap, “Owls” obviously –

It was great fun and I plan to play around more with them. I look forward to trying out new techniques on these.

P.S. – Pretty good photos from a camera phone, huh? It’s my new snapshot camera. I took these right before mailing them out, almost didn’t remember to record them, but so glad I did.
